Choose the coast road trip as well as the cruise
Port Stephens fits a Newcastle or Sydney route with beaches and resident-dolphin products. Hervey Bay fits a Brisbane–Fraser Coast route where K’gari can be the second anchor. If either destination is a detour, price the added nights, ground transport and lost travel time.
Port Stephens reaches further into the calendar
Official Port Stephens material publishes a May–November 2026 season, and Moonshadow TQC lists 23 May–8 November 2026. Hervey Bay’s dedicated fleet concentrates from July into October. The exact operator calendar still overrides both destination summaries.
Shorter cruises can help—but motion still matters
Common Port Stephens products use a shorter migration-cruise format from Nelson Bay. That can suit a family or compact itinerary, but open-coast movement may be more demanding. Hervey Bay offers trips from shorter small-vessel outings to long sailing days; choose duration and platform together.
Dolphins and land lookouts change the fallback
Port Stephens can remain a wildlife-and-coast holiday through dolphin products and headland opportunities even if whale plans change. Hervey Bay’s fallback is different: K’gari, the Great Sandy Strait, fishing and a slower bay itinerary. Pick the fallback the group would actually enjoy.
