Urangan Pier at sunrise
The pier creates a long leading line across shallow water and tidal flats. Sunrise offers cool conditions and soft colour, but the exact angle and tide shape the composition. Scout in daylight and arrive only where access and personal safety are comfortable.
From shore, use the pier as geometry; from the deck, use people, fishing and repeating rail structure for scale. Keep tripods out of the main path and give active fishing lines space.
Whales from a moving boat
Use a fast shutter speed, continuous autofocus and burst shooting. A mid-range telephoto is easier than an extreme lens on a moving deck. Keep a wider option for a close surface and protect equipment from spray.
Watch the animal rather than only the screen. No operator can position a wild whale for a shot. Follow crew instructions and never pressure the skipper to approach.
Tidal beach patterns and Point Vernon
At low tide, Hervey Bay exposes flats, channels and textures that can produce minimalist images. Higher water brings reflections and colour closer to shore. Use a tide table and secure footwear.
Point Vernon adds rocky foregrounds, birds and quieter bays. Respect residential access, dogs and anglers. Do not step onto unstable or environmentally sensitive surfaces for a composition.
Marina and Great Sandy Strait sunset
Urangan Marina offers boats, masts and sheltered reflections in evening light. The Great Sandy Strait can produce broad sunset colour. Work from public access, avoid blocking marina operations and do not enter private pontoons.
A polariser can manage glare but may make wide sky tones uneven. Bracket exposure when bright sky and dark boats exceed the camera’s range.
Gardens, wetlands and day trips
Botanic Gardens and Arkarra Lagoons suit detail, birds and quieter green scenes. Longer lenses help maintain wildlife distance. Maryborough adds heritage architecture; Childers and Woodgate add streetscape, boardwalk and wildlife possibilities.
Photography must follow venue/park rules. A kangaroo, bird or turtle is never a prop. Mon Repos lighting restrictions are conservation requirements.
Drone and image rights

Urangan Pier and the flat bay horizon suit sunrise and late-day compositions; Point Vernon adds rock and tidal texture; the marina works best when the boats and reflected light are the subject. Check tide and cloud rather than returning to the same frame by habit.
For whales, prepare both a moderate telephoto and a wider setting, then keep the camera down between sequences. Follow crew directions, secure the strap and leave drones out of wildlife encounters unless every aviation and wildlife rule has been established.
