Pet-friendly Hervey Bay: beaches, cafés and stays

Start with the council map

Fraser Coast Council replaced the former timed beach zones in February 2026 with three 24-hour off-leash areas: Scarness from Tooan Tooan Creek to Scarness Jetty; Urangan from the Margaret Street groyne to Dayman Park (Reef World); and, until Stage 2 begins, Urangan between Moolyyir Creek and Pulgul Creek. If an area is not signed off-leash or dog-free, dogs must remain on a leash.

Council says Stage 2 is planned later in 2026 subject to local-law changes, so open the live council page and follow beach-entry signs. Keep a lead, bags and water available even in an off-leash zone; effective control and reliable recall are still required.

Choose the accommodation around the policy

Quarterdecks Retreat publishes selected pet-friendly accommodation by arrangement. Boat Harbour Apartments appears on a major booking platform with selected pet-friendly villa types, not every room. Colonial Village is identified in official destination material as pet-friendly. Holiday parks may allow dogs only on selected sites or cabins.

Obtain approval in writing for the exact pet, number, size and booked unit. Ask about fees, bonds, fencing, unattended-pet rules and cleaning. A platform filter can remain active after an individual room category becomes unavailable.

Point Vernon and quieter western areas suit self-catering and shoreline access, but a car is useful. Marina-side Urangan works when a pet-friendly villa and boat departure need to coexist, noting that pets cannot simply accompany every tour.

Pet-friendly villas in Urangan

Vila Paus at 504 Esplanade offers two self-contained villas: a three-bedroom villa sleeping up to six and a two-bedroom villa sleeping up to five. The operator says both welcome well-behaved pets and provide private fenced gardens, off-street parking and access to a 7 kW EV charger by prior arrangement.

Obtain written approval for the exact pet and villa, then check the current rules, final total, availability and cancellation terms before booking. Contact details differ between current public sources, so use the operator’s live website rather than relying on a copied telephone number.

Dog-friendly sites at Pialba during the redevelopment

Pialba Beachfront Caravan Park currently lists designated dog-friendly powered options on its reopened western side while Stage 2 work continues elsewhere. Confirm that the exact site is pet-friendly before paying, then open the current park rules for leash, exclusion, cleaning, unattended-pet and maximum-pet conditions.

The playground and recreation room are presently closed during the works. Check the operator’s live notice rather than relying on a forecast completion month.

Dog-friendly beaches and foreshore

Use council-designated zones, then choose the tide. Point Vernon’s shoreline can be rocky/tidal; Torquay and Scarness have busier shared foreshore; Urangan includes fishing and marina activity. Secure footwear and controlled leads are sensible around hooks, birds and crowds.

Rinse salt and sand, check paws for heat or cuts, and avoid the hottest part of summer days. Never leave a dog in a parked car while visiting an attraction.

Cafés and dining

Outdoor tables change with staffing, weather and management policy. Call the venue directly and ask whether a dog is permitted at the outdoor table on the intended day. Do not infer permission from an old social photograph.

Torquay and Scarness provide the broadest chance of finding outdoor café seating near a walk, while Point Vernon trips are easier with takeaway or self-catering. Keep the dog out of food-service areas where rules require it.

Washing pet bedding while you travel

Happy Tails Pet Laundromat at 1 Peters Lane, Pialba, provides pet-only self-service washing and drying for bedding, blankets, soft pet gear and horse rugs, with a booked Drop’n’Go service also listed.

Check the official website for current hours, accepted items, machine availability, prices and booking requirements. This is a laundry for pet belongings, not a dog-washing facility.

Whales, K’gari and pet care

Marine tours and K’gari days are long and generally unsuitable for bringing a pet. Confirm a sitter, kennel or accommodation policy for unattended animals before booking the tour. Do not assume the room permits a dog to be left alone.

K’gari has wildlife and national-park rules; do not plan to take a domestic dog without checking the official current rules. The destination page must never use “pet-friendly” to blur protected-area restrictions.

A low-stress dog-friendly plan

Choose a property with approved pet terms, use a signed morning beach zone, rest through the heat and take an evening foreshore walk. Add takeaway or a confirmed outdoor table. Keep one human-only tour day only if pet care is genuinely solved.

A pet-friendly property may accept only selected rooms, sizes or dates and may charge a fee or require approval. A dog-access beach can have signed boundaries or time conditions. Check each exact rule rather than carrying one ‘pet-friendly’ label across the trip.

Point Vernon and quieter self-catering stays can work well with a car; Esplanade areas can work when the daily walk and meal are close. Pack shade, water, lead and waste bags, and keep wildlife and other beach users in the plan.
