Hervey Bay’s visitor strip runs for kilometres. A central-looking map pin can still be a poor base for an early marina check-in, and River Heads is a separate transfer south of the city.

Build the trip as four transport questions

Airport to accommodation

Fraser Coast Regional Council lists taxi, shuttle, rideshare and rental-car options at Hervey Bay Airport. The council says Hervey Bay Taxis operates standard and wheelchair-accessible vehicles and the airport shuttle requires a booking. Confirm the actual vehicle, assistance, luggage and child-restraint need directly.

For an intercity transfer, Atkinson’s Specialist Shuttles publishes pre-booked door-to-door Hervey Bay–Brisbane return services three times daily, with Brisbane Airport, cruise-terminal and selected Sunshine Coast transfers also listed. Pickup times are indicative and fares require a quote. Confirm luggage, child restraints, mobility aids and the exact collection time directly; the public schedule does not establish wheelchair access.

Local buses

Wide Bay Transit operates Hervey Bay’s urban routes, with current journey information also published through Translink. Use the live timetable and map the final walk from the stop; do not plan from an old social post or saved screenshot. Wide Bay Transit currently says urban services are cash-only and that many buses are low-floor wheelchair accessible. If a low-floor vehicle is essential, confirm the exact trip with the operator because not every vehicle is the same.

Route 705: links Maryborough with Hervey Bay and runs seven days under the published timetable.

Route 716: connects Pialba, Scarness, Torquay and Urangan’s Boat Harbour area Monday–Saturday.

Sundays and most public holidays: the combined timetable lists only 705. Neither listed service runs on Christmas Day or Good Friday.

A route passing the harbour does not guarantee arrival before a particular cruise check-in. Plan the outward and return trips separately, then measure the walk from the named stop to the operator desk. The route can take a different street from the waterfront you expect.

Marinas are not interchangeable

Save the operator’s exact check-in desk. Great Sandy Straits Marina, Whale Bay Marina and the Boat Club harbour area are in the wider Urangan precinct but should not be treated as one pin. Ask the operator whether a transfer is included and whether it serves the named accommodation.

River Heads and K’gari connections

River Heads is outside the central Hervey Bay visitor strip. A tour or resort may include a transfer, while a ferry-only or self-drive booking may not. Confirm the pickup address, luggage rules, child restraints, accessibility, check-in buffer and what happens if the return changes.

A realistic no-car base

Choose marina-side Urangan for repeated boat departures, or Torquay/Scarness for a stronger beach-and-dining walking pattern with planned marine transfers. Pialba can work for shops and services. Point Vernon generally needs more deliberate transport.

A two-day Hervey Bay itinerary without a car

This suggested plan groups activities around your accommodation. Set the walking distance to suit your group, the weather and the exact address; the whole Esplanade is too long to treat as one short walk.

Day one: settle into one waterfront area

Arrange the airport-to-accommodation journey before arrival. From Torquay or Scarness, keep the afternoon to a nearby beach, foreshore walk and local meal. From pier-side Urangan, build the afternoon around the pier and nearby waterfront instead.

Use the dining guide by area and beach guide to choose stops close together. Check the return transport before adding a distant attraction.

Day two: one pre-arranged experience

In whale season, choose a whale-watching operator and confirm the exact check-in desk and any accommodation pickup. If you prefer K’gari, choose a guided day trip and confirm whether your address is on its pickup route.

Keep the other half of the day flexible. A marine trip can change with conditions; avoid making a tight final flight or a second prepaid tour depend on its scheduled return.

Which base works best without a car?

• Torquay or Scarness: a useful starting point for a stay built around beach walks and meals, with transfers for boat days.
• The Urangan marina precinct: useful when early cruises are the priority. Compare marina hotels and apartments against your operator’s desk.
• Pier-side Urangan: useful for the pier and nearby foreshore. It is a different pocket from the whale marinas.

Before relying on a bus or pickup

Check the exact travel date, direction, final service and walk from the stop. Confirm luggage, child-restraint and mobility requirements with the relevant provider. Ask a tour operator explicitly whether both outward and return accommodation transfers are included; a ferry booking alone does not establish transport to River Heads.
