Day one: arrive and understand the bay
Use the first day for a low-risk orientation. Walk part of Urangan Pier, identify the marina or next morning’s pickup and eat in the same area. Do not spend the first afternoon crossing every suburb; learn the geography and protect recovery after travel.
Day two: the whale-watching anchor
In season, place the whale cruise early enough that a later day could absorb an operator change. Compare vessel, duration, accessibility and check-in rather than choosing by a guaranteed-sounding wildlife claim. Keep the post-cruise meal flexible.
Outside the published whale season, replace this with fishing, a guided water activity or a nature morning. Confirm the operator’s current calendar rather than relying on last year’s dates.
Day three: K’gari
Use a guided day for a first visit unless the driver, vehicle, permits, tide planning and sand experience make self-drive genuinely suitable. Confirm whether the product is a classic inland/eastern-beach 4WD day, a western-side marine trip or a resort transfer; they are different experiences.
Leave the evening uncommitted because island routes and ferry timing depend on current conditions.
Day four: Hervey Bay at local pace
Choose a cooler window for the Esplanade shared path, then use Torquay or Scarness for a meal and tide-aware shoreline time. Families can add WetSide when its current seasonal calendar confirms it is open. Do not assume any beach is patrolled; check Beachsafe on the day.
Day five: reserve day or one regional trip
Keep this day available until the weather-sensitive bookings have run. If no rebooking is needed, choose one regional direction: Maryborough for heritage and museums, or Mon Repos during its official turtle-encounter season. A departure-day version should stay local and finish early.
Where to base five days
Urangan marina is efficient for boat-heavy trips. Torquay or Scarness gives a stronger everyday beach-and-food rhythm. A car makes a five-day plan easier once it includes River Heads, wetlands or a regional day trip; without one, reduce the itinerary to one walkable base plus pre-arranged transfers.
